Liverpool 2–2 Arsenal: Gunners fought back from two goals down to draw against Liverpool

Arsenal fought back from a two-goal deficit to salvage a 2–2 draw against Liverpool despite Mikel Merino being sent off after receiving a red card, and Arsenal finishing the game with 10 men.

How the game unfolded

Arsenal are fighting to secure a second-place finish. Started the game with an early scoring opportunity as Saka broke Liverpool’s offside line, making a run on a set piece, but shot wide of the far post.

Liverpool immediately tried to punish that mass. David Raya made an incredible point-blank save, denying Diaz from scoring. Liverpool didn’t have to wait too long as they scored in the first 20th minute when Arsenal was caught off guard from a quick throw-in, and Cody Gakpo headed the cross by Andy Robertson.

A minute later, the Reds made it 2–0 when Dominik Szoboszlai made an unmissable tap-in pass, and Luis Diaz scored the second goal. Liverpool almost made it three-nil, with David Raya keeping Curtis Jones’ curling effort.

However, Arsenal came back better after half-time and quickly reduced the deficit when Martinelli headed in a cross from Leandro Trossard in the 47th minute. Arsenal went on to control the rhythm of the game from there, creating multiple scoring opportunities and pushing the Reds into their box.

Arsenal equalised in the 70th minute when Alisson Becker tipped a shot from Martin Odegaard onto the crossbar, and Merino reacted quickly and scored the 2nd.

Arsenal finished the game with 10 men, Mikel Merino received his 2nd yellow card booking after lunging into Szoboszlai outside the Arsenal box.

Liverpool couldn’t capitalise on their numerical advantage, and the Reds went closest to a winner with Robertson scoring from close range, only for the referee to disallow the goal due to a foul made by Ibrahim Konate on Myles Lewis-Skelly at a corner

Arsenal just need one more point to ensure a seat in the Champions League because they have a superior goal difference compared to all top-five ranking teams, despite the Gunners having won only one game in their last 6 Premier League games.
