Liverpool’s ‘transfer priorities’ might halt Jeremie Frimpong progress

Liverpool is nearing a deal for Bayern Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong. However, reports suggest that addressing this position is not the club’s priority position this summer transfer window.

Frimpong was a key figure in Xabi Alonso’s success at Bayern Leverkusen,
flourishing in a wing-back role that may not exist under the coach succeeding Xabi, who’s headed for Real Madrid.

It could be in Leverkusen’s best interest to sell Frimpong for a big cash. The Dutch defender reportedly has a release clause allowing him to leave for a maximum of €40 million (£34 million).

Liverpool was looking to hand over the role of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Conor Bradley. Still, with Frimpong’s opportunistic deal, it has prioritised a less urgent issue over a more pressing one.

Liverpool has been more keen on recruiting a left-back, according to reports. The Reds must quickly decide whether to pursue Frimpong or leave it.

The left-back position is still regarded as the top priority, with Andrew Robertson no longer the player he was, and the potential to upgrade on Kostas Tsimikas. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is the player who is linked chiefly, although he would be more expensive than Frimpong.

Liverpool could also sign Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer next summer, but they still need to replace Virgil van Dijk in the long term. They are also in the market for a centre-back and are considered one of the clubs with a good chance of signing Dean Huijsen.

There’s also the issue of needing a striker to improve upon an inconsistent Darwin Nunez, and there isn’t an unlimited budget to spend.
